Özet:
The composition, abundance and distribution of the rodent fauna in the Menagesha State Forest, Ethiopia was investigated with particular emphasis on the ecology of the endemic Praomys albipes. Both snap and live-trapping surveys were conducted to assess the species composition, activity patterns, reproduction, embryo sizes, weight and feeding habits of P.albipes. The snap-trapping surveys from November 1991 to July 1993 at different vegetation zones revealed the following rodents: Praomys albipes, Pelomys harringtoni, Lophuromys flavopunctatus, Mus mahomet, Airvicanthis dembeensis, Rattus rattus, Otomys typus, Stenocephalemys griseicauda and Dendromus mystacalis. A total of 293 rodents were captured during the snap-trapping surveys. P.albipes comprised 54.3% of the total catch followed by Pelomys harringtoni (15.4%), L.flavopunctatus (11.2%) and N.mahomet (10.9%). The remaining five species comprised only 8.2%. P.albipes and L.flavopunctatus were distributed within an altitudinal range from 2200-3300m asl, occurring in bush, forest and Erica scrub. Pelomys harringtoni and M.mahomet were common in Erica scrub and bushy vegetation respectively. P.albipes is exclusively nocturnal. From snap-trapping, live-trapping and captive breeding programmes, reproductively active males with scrotal testes were observed throughout the year and the testes, once scrotal, remained so throughout life. Females breed throughout the year with a peak at the beginning of the dry season (November). The number of embryos ranged from 2-8. Adult scrotal males and pregnant females weighed above 50g, subadults 30-39 and young ones below 29g. A steady increase in head and body length was recorded up to 40g. Analysis of diet from the stomach contents showed that berries and green leaves formed the largest proportion. The density of rodents was assessed by conducting bimonthly live-trapping in a 1ha grid from May 1992 to July 1993. The following six species of rodents were recorded: P.albipes, M.mahomet, L.flavopunctatus, O.typus, Pelomys harringtoni and Graphiurus murinus. P.albipes comprised 64.3%, M.mahomet 24.3% and L.flavopunctatus 6.1%. The remaining three species comprised only 5.1% of the total. The total number of rodents observed on the live-trapping grid decreased towards the last trapping occasions. The monthly biomass ranged from 454-1546g with P.albipes contributing the largest sum. Recruitment of young or subadults was very low throughout the study period. More individuals were captured at the edge of the grid than at the centre, and forest blocks both at the edge and centre captured significantly more rodents than either the shrub or the grass blocks. Duration of residence for females was higher than for males. The mean home range length for females was 29.2m while for males, it was 65.3m. Males wandered about more than females. Estimates of P.albipes population were obtained using direct enumeration, Hayne's, Fisher & Ford's, Jolly-Seber's and du Feu's methods. From laboratory bred P.albipes, litter size ranged from 2-6 young with the mean weight of 3.0g at birth. The minimum conception and gestation time was 80 and 23 days respectively. A high rate of increase in weight was recorded in both males and females up to ten weeks while increase in size of ear and hindfoot was evident up to nine weeks. The young are born naked and blind, with ear pinnae folded and toes fused. In the laboratory, P.albipes consumed almost all the berries and green leaves supplied from the wild.
