Followership is a new theory and gaining an understanding of this area may, in fact, allow organizations the ability to reduce the cost of production and increase profits with a better return on investment (ROI) than leadership. Followership is the most critical member of the leader-follower dyad and may give more influence on organizational outcomes than leadership. Followerships' criticality becomes clear when one realizes that most people, including leaders, perform the role of a follower most of their time at work. Within this study I examined leadership and followership traits of leaders within a knowledge worker environment and the association, if any, with team performance. I found a significant positive association between followership and team performance. However, no significant association between leadership and team performance occurred. I used Amazon Mechanical Turk to find 98 participants that were able to complete study. Given there appears to be a significant association between a leader's followership traits and their teams' performance, companies are likely to receive better results and returns on investment by adding followership training to manger learning plans. The idea that followership may offer more benefits to organizations than leadership, as suggested by Chaleff (2009), Hoptin (2014), Kelley (1992), Kellerman (2012), Murji (2015), and Raffo (2013), has gained added support from the findings of this study. As the findings of this study and other scholars have indicated, academics and businesses may find that followership has more potential to improve team performance than leadership and may decide to at least update existing leadership training to include followership training (Hoptin, 2014; Murji, 2015; Raffo, 2013). Thus, there is a need for future studies to figure out to what extent followership traits of leaders within a knowledge worker environment have on team performance. Also, could an organization increase team performance simply by introducing front line managers to followership? Finally, another, interesting research topic suggested by Chaleff (2016), would be to determine if followership styles correlate to Myers-Briggs types. If correlated could we tailor any of the existing Myers-Briggs training to produce followership training for managers that increases team performance?
