Özet:
Seaports in the United States are the epicenter of economic productivity and a major source of environmental contamination. The Houston Ship Channel (HSC), a segment of the Port of Houston, is one of the most active seaports in the United States. It accommodates a substantial amount of ships and barges transporting cargo such as petroleum and petroleum products, organic chemicals, and crude fertilizers and minerals. Port activities have made it vulnerable to various contaminants from runoff, wastewater discharges and industrial processes. Contamination from oil pollutants and other fossil fuels containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are of major concern for this area. Thus, the HSC provides an important study area for the spatial and temporal analysis of PAHs across each of its 14 classified segments. Seven segments within the HSC were chosen to investigate use activities of the study area. These segments may be subjected to recurring contamination as a result of industrial processes, lack of regulation or enforcement of existing environmental regulation. Surface sediment sampling data was downloaded from the TCEQ Clean Rivers Program (CRP) data website. This web tool gathers sampling data and provides maps to locate rivers and streams and makes the data available for download for specific river basin. The purpose of this research is to characterize the spatial and temporal patterns of PAHs contamination in seven segments within the Houston Ship Channel in Houston, Texas. The variables of distance to known point sources and distance to the coastline was examined to determine the correlation of either variable relative to an increase in PAHs contamination in any of the seven segments. This project compared measurements of PAHs concentration for the period between August 1992 and July 2017. Alternative methods to visualize spatial and temporal patterns can play an essential role in management objectives and approaches that are likely to reduce future problems in the seaport. The broader impacts include: 1) boosting public confidence in water quality monitoring results, 2) strengthening support for plans to reduce adverse impacts to the seaport, 3) early warning sign for broader problems and 4) contributing to decision making efficiency.
