Özet:
This thesis describes the histological appearance and the tension lines of normal skin together with the clinical features, pathological behaviour and treatment of some common skin lesions. Histological examination of the normal skin revealed the presence of a superficial, thin epidermis and a subjacent dermis. The epidermis was made up of a basel layer, a prickle cell layer, a granular layer and horney layer. There was no stratum lucidum. The epidermis did not vary in thickness between different parts of the body. Horse skin was found to contain apocrine type of sweat glands. Hair and sebaceous glands were distributed in varying density and their structures did not differ from those of other domesticated animals. Longitudinal or transverse stab wounds on different surfaces of the limb revealed that the maximum extensibility of the skin was parallel to the long axis of the limb. Over the accessory carpal bone there was an area of no preferential direction of re-orientation. The development of granulomata or masses of proud flesh was found to be the most important hazard of the healing of cutaneous wounds of the distal extremities. Excision of the granulation tissue followed by pinch grafting techniques proved the most effective method of overcoming this problem. It is suggested that the inhibition of fibroplasia by pinch grafting is humorally mediated. Sarcoids were the most common skin neoplasms found in this survey and squamous cell carcinomas and melanomas were the next most common neoplasms found. Sarcoids tended to decrease in incidence with age, whilst squamous cell carcinomas and melanomas tended to increase in incidence with age. Combined vaccine programmes and partial or complete surgical excision were used, Vaccines were prepared according to Wheat (1964) and used according to Page et al (1967). One case responded successfully to the vaccine. Combined vaccine and excision proved to accelerate the clinical response and shorten the healing time.
