Recent research in psychology has introduced "grit" as an important characteristic observable in successful students (Duckworth, 2007; 2016). The grit framework indicates that dedicated effort over long-term periods can help individuals overcome obstacles in the pursuit of goals. Popular applications of the grit framework sometimes work to further the American notion of "rugged individualism," and belief in working meritocracy, by placing the onus of academic achievement upon the individual and his or her efforts. This often conjointly seems to blame underachievement on student deficiencies (Tough, 2013; 2016). These perspectives can overlook the effects of structural and cultural factors that are also associated with learning (Noguera & Kundu, 2014; Kundu 2016; 2017). Sociologically, thus, certain applications of grit can be limited in explaining social mobility: they may not address the social contexts of the young people whose achievements they assess; or, they may lack a dynamic understanding of these students' cultures. This dissertation applies a qualitative, sociological framework by offering "agency" as a concept to complement grit and allow for a broader understanding of factors that facilitate student social mobility and goal formation. Specifically, through in-depth, semi-structured interviews (n=46), this research observes students who have experienced upward mobility and academic and professional success, despite highly disadvantaged backgrounds. Participants have experienced challenging life factors such as homelessness, incarceration, and undocumented status. This project considers how individuals navigate opportunity structures and exhibit help-seeking behavior, as well as, examines the role of support systems in their lives, indicating the interaction of social and cultural capital (Bourdieu, 1986; Bandura, 1998). This dissertation strongly suggests that interplay between individual and social factors is necessary for students to navigate personal and structural barriers towards success.
