Özet:
Solid state materials are typically materials which are highly ordered and formed at high temperatures. There are many different synthetic techniques used to synthesize solid state materials. This research is focused on the ceramic method for the synthesis of solid state materials. The ceramic method uses high temperatures and closed reaction vessels to complete the synthesis. Our goal is not only to synthesize materials but also synthesize single crystals of those materials.
Stoichiometric amounts of starting materials were loaded into fused silica tubes, which were coated with carbon. The tubes were sealed under vacuum at a pressure of 50--70 microns of Hg by using a methane/oxygen torch. Then, the tubes are transferred to a programmable furnace. After the reaction is complete the tubes are opened. We examine the crystallinity of the samples using optical microscopy. If we deem a material of high enough quality, we then subject the sample to scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to get high resolution images of the sample. Elemental data on the samples is also collected using energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS).
