In today's pharmaceutical drug delivery, most anticancer drugs are poorly soluble in water. This poses a problem because the drugs are unable to be delivered through the hydrophilic media. Another problem that arises is the lack of specific delivery to the desired target in the body to reduce the side effects. In order to have an effective therapeutic delivery system, magnetically targeted drug delivery system (MT-DDS) is under development. A MT-DDS is to encapsulate magnetite nanoparticles along with the anticancer drug inside the hydrophobic cores of polymeric micelles. The purpose of using magnetite nanoparticles is due to their superparamagnetic properties, small size and low toxicity. Another preferred reason is for their contrast effect on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to be able to evaluate the cancer therapy to image the tumor response to treatment. The main goal of this study is to synthesize the magnetite nanoparticles using high thermal decomposition of iron acetylacetonate, in the presence of a reducing and surfactants. We also aim to deliver the anticancer drug chlorambucil-tempol adduct with the assistance of USION. We plan to encapsulate the magnetite nanoparticles along with CT inside the hydrophobic core of methoxy poly (ethylene glycol)-poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (mPEG-PLGA) micelles using the single emulsion method. Ultimately, we would like to develop a useful tool for co-encapsulating hydrophobic anticancer drugs and USIONPs in the polymeric micelles for anticancer therapeutic applications.
