Özet:
The phenomenon of integrating religion into health care decision making occurs throughout health care sectors. While the phenomenon is documented in literature, insight from the patient perspective is scarcely documented and is not clearly understood. The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological study was to explore the role of religion in health care decision making when governed by religious convictions. The study problem addressed was perceived conflicts occurring when patients chose to integrate religious beliefs into health care decisions that goes against the recommended treatment. Fifteen participants, who were health care patients within the past 10 years and made health care decisions governed by their religious convictions, provided the patient perspective based upon their observations and experiences. Semi-structured phone interviews utilizing ten open-ended questions, were conducted. Transcribed interviews, reviewed by participants for accuracy, were analyzed in parallel with each research question (RQ1 - perspective on health care decision making process, RQ2 - perspective on quality of alternative treatment options, and RQ3 - perspective on existing ethical conflicts). Findings confirmed variance in perceptions, and themes ranged from wide acceptance and integration to no acceptance with a need for more integration; many, to no quality treatment alternatives; and, the perception of the presence of a variety of ethical conflicts when religion is integrated into health care decisions. Results contributed to recommendations for future research exploring these perceptions, specific religions, and a patient-medical professional perspective comparison. For practical application, recommendations suggest strategy development to improve the care provided and quality of alternative options offered. Also, a mandate for trainings and renewable certifications are recommended to ensure increased acumen and acceptance of religious diversity and the influence on health care decisions, to mitigate ethical conflicts and treatment disparities.
