The around-the-clock nature of modern society causes many individuals to sacrifice sleep in order to allocate additional time to work and leisure activities. In fact, more than one third of American adults report sleeping less than is recommended to prevent cognitive and health-related impairments. Most commonly, individuals maintain short sleep schedules during the workweek and attempt to catch-up on lost sleep during the weekend. However, it is unknown whether this common behavior of weekend recovery sleep is a sufficient countermeasure strategy to restore cognitive function to well-rested levels. This dissertation aimed to understand how cognition and mood respond to and recover from a workweek of insufficient sleep in order to provide humans the knowledge necessary to optimally, and safely, function.
One five-day workweek of insufficient sleep produced impairments in cognitive performance that were unable to be recovered over a two-day weekend. In fact, our findings revealed that impairments take between five days and two weeks to recover, suggesting that it is more feasible to prevent, rather than attempt to recover from, chronic sleep loss. Importantly, we then demonstrated that "short sleepers" (i.e., individuals that habitually sleep <6.5h each night) do have the ability to extend their sleep to the recommended amount in the real world, and they performed and felt better as a result.
In addition to impairing performance during typical work hours, we found that a workweek of sleep loss impaired cognition immediately upon and across the first hour after awakening from sleep, such that learning was attenuated and subjective sleepiness levels were increased.
Our findings demonstrate the necessity, effectiveness, and feasibility of maintaining adequate sleep to promote optimal performance. Therefore, we lastly aimed to determine whether manipulating indoor lighting could further enhance daytime cognitive function in well-rested individuals. We found that bright white light and intermittent blue-enriched white light had mixed effects on daytime performance compared with typical room light, suggesting that additional research is needed to determine ideal workplace lighting conditions.
In summary, this dissertation reveals the long-lasting consequences of sacrificing sleep during the workweek and underscores the importance of prioritizing obtaining the recommended amount of sleep.
