Özet:
Recalling the famous words of Peter Gay’s history, this work offers an interpretation. Two interpretations, actually. Body and Soul of Enlightenment is an interpretation, first, of John Wesley and eighteenth-century Methodism in light John Locke’s influence on Enlightenment thought in England. To do this, it offers a second interpretation, that assertions about the meaning of the body and the soul, the double nature of human personhood, are the primary arena in which Wesley’s teachings and Enlightenment thought converge. I argue that both Methodism and contemporaneous Enlightenment philosophy in England should be understood as interlocking debates regarding the meaning of the human person. These debates centered on the role of the physical body and the reality of the soul.
As the Enlightenment increasingly proclaimed a mechanistic understanding of the person, Wesley applied this approach to a simplified program of spiritual experience. He emphasized training the body to be an outward reflection of an internal spiritual reality. In the process, Wesley and his Methodists appropriated the philosophy of mind and person begun by John Locke. Subverting narratives of “enthusiasm,” Methodist sermons and spiritual diaries engaged in Lockean borrowings, identifying new “spiritual senses” that made the “born again” soul the seat of all reflective reasoning. Gathered spiritual sensations combined to form complex ideas concerning Christian understanding through the fusion of mind and soul, which were then reflected in bodily action. To be Enlightened, both spiritually as well as intellectually, was the function of a body and soul transformed by spiritual reason.
In light of its exploration of both the Enlightenment and religion, the big questions that Body and Soul of Enlightenment pose revolve around questions of the person and personhood’s relationship to ideas and belief. The relationships and tensions I identify between the competing impulses of modernization and spiritual dynamism call for a reformulation of histories concerning Christianity’s relationship to the “dis-enchantment” of the West. My work also compels reinterpretations of what has been typically seen as unintellectual evangelical Christianity’s role in the broad pathways of Enlightenment thought. Ultimately, this is a project that centers on profound questions of humanity’s relationship to faith and mind, and, ultimately, the unfolding definitions of human personhood.
