Most language attrition studies have focused on the loss of L1 among international immigrants, and less commonly focused on L2 speakers. However, we expect that the loss of language skills will afflict most L2 learners because the majority of learners do not employ their L2 as their primary language of communication throughout their lives. Hence, the question, how does one maintain his/her L2 skills so they are still available when needed? .
The group of interest in this study is return missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). The study compares the oral lexical recall of two groups of these return missionaries: Group 1 included 20 missionaries who had returned within seven months of the study, and Group 2 included 20 missionaries who had returned 20 years (+/-5) before the study. Former studies about language attrition in LDS missionaries have investigated variables such as original time in the foreign country, time since the mission, affect variables concerning motivation, attitudes and beliefs (Hansen et al., 2012a), and formal instruction after the mission (Russell, 2012). The current study looks at new individual factors by exploring participants' social networks, and time spent in reading, writing, listening and conversation during different intervals since the mission. Participants' current lexical abilities in Spanish were measured through a test, which included two elicitation tasks. One task used images to elicit Spanish vocabulary, and the other task used English words to elicit Spanish vocabulary. For both tasks, acceptableness was computed following the methodology used by Hansen et al. (2012a). In addition to acceptableness, my test recorded the precise time taken for each response.
Results showed a significant level of attrition in the 20-year group, but other factors did not show a strong correlation with the dependent variables, nor a significant level of difference between groups. The two different tests did prove interesting, as the image test almost universally required more response time than the translation task, which may indicate an extra step in processing images versus words. The methods used here could be revised for better results in future studies.
