Özet:
This investigation examines the history of worship services based on Luther's Deutsche Messe and reveals the ecclesiological and doctrinal considerations undergirding the Reformer's German Mass project, especially the central teaching of the Christian faith, justification by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of the chorale service in the early life of The Lutheran Church -- Missouri Synod and the minimization of this resource in later LCMS history. Criticism of the German Mass tradition by liturgical scholars and the larger Liturgical Movement is evaluated and refuted. The Lutheran doctrine of the adiaphora is considered in relationship to the Church's liturgy; moreover, the vital connection between worship, ecclesiology, and soteriology is accentuated.
While emphasizing Luther's conservative liturgical viewpoint, this work underscores the Reformer's concern for worship that is mindful of mission, catechesis, the edification of the community, and the glory of God. Services utilizing the structure and principles of Luther's Deutsche Messe model allow for worship that supports the local congregation as the context for God's saving work while providing an appropriate liturgical setting for the public administration of the marks of the Church: the pure preaching of the Gospel and the right administration of the Sacraments.
The capstone of this project/dissertation is a set of newly composed liturgical texts for the historic order of the service. These texts were written to be sung with music from well-known hymn tunes. A rationale is provided for the composition of the specific liturgical texts and the selection of the hymn tunes; moreover, an analysis of the relationship between the new texts and Luther's German Mass is offered. The newly composed service underwent successful trial and evaluation by written responses in the Lake Pepin Circuit of the Minnesota South District of The Lutheran Church -- Missouri Synod, including the author's congregation, Immanuel Lutheran Church of Hay Creek (Red Wing), Minnesota.
