Özet:
"Imperfectly heard, obscured by an incessant jamming, forced to change wavelengths two or three times in the course of a broadcast, the Voice of Fighting Algeria could hardly ever be heard from beginning to end. It was a choppy, broken voice... This voice [was] often absent, physically inaudible...
...At the end of the evening, not hearing the Voice, the listener would sometimes leave the needle on the jammed wavelength or one that simply produced static, and would announce that the voice of the combatants was here."---Frantz Fanon.
In contrast to more ubiquitous and normative theories of noise in media, communications, art, and scientific studies, this thesis proposes a Fanonian engagement with noise that centers the construction of affinity and communal bonds through varied acts of collective and individual interpretation. This theory of noise as a generative and constructive force draws on the recent work of Ian Baucom and the "tactics of listening," employed in Frantz Fanon's This Is the Voice of Algeria, as well as Marie Thompson's work in Beyond Unwanted Sound: Noise, Affect, and Aesthetic Moralism..
Fanon's theory of noise is understood as a precursor to the work of cybernetic theorists Henri Atlan and Michel Serres. Viewed as foundational noise theorists in Thompson's work, the addition of Fanon seeks to decenter the largely Eurocentric and technocratic scholarly tendencies found in noise and sound studies. Aspects of my own creative practice that draw on Fanon's "tactics of listening" as well as my efforts to engage noise in its Fanonian capacity are detailed. Additionally, my work is situated within a growing field of contemporary art that conceives of noise in its generative capacities.
