Historically, anger-in and anger-out have been viewed as unrelated, orthogonal factors. This thinking was in line with the strong correlation between aggression and impulsivity typically seen in research data as well as numerous studies demonstrating a distinction between anger expressed internally to that expressed externally. However, new evidence suggests that aggressive behavior might not be as spontaneous as previously believed. Recent thinking contends that cognitive factors related to anger-in might underlie the relationship between impulsivity and aggression. In other words, it is possible that anger-in and anger-out may be related. Ego-depletion Theory postulates that rumination (related to anger-in) drains an individual's self-control capacities so that their willpower is exhausted and they are more likely to act rashly after they are provoked. The current study seeks to increase the knowledge on aggressive behavior by investigating the relationship between aggression (connected to anger-out), impulsivity, and rumination (associated with anger-in) in child and adult males and females. Results suggest that rumination may moderate the relationship between impulsivity and aggression, but only in certain circumstances. Results also provide support for mediation effects, particularly with verbal aggression. These results lend support to the theory that rumination increases an individual's likelihood of acting aggressively. The clinical implications of these finding are discussed, as well as future areas of research.
