Özet:
Sexual assault is relatively unique compared to other crimes because victims are more often blamed for their assaults than victims of other crimes are blamed (Bieneck & Krahe, 2011). In general, sexual assault victims of Color are more often blamed for their assaults than White victims (Donovan, 2007; Willis, 1992). Just World Beliefs (JWBs) have been found to contribute to ascribing blame in cases of sexual assault, specifically finding that individuals with high JWBs attribute more blame to victims (Hayes, Lorenz & Bell, 2013). Additionally, individuals possessing high JWBs are more likely to engage in discriminatory and prejudicial behavior than individuals with low-moderate JWBs (Hagiwarwa, Alderson & McCauley, 2015). Within the current study, victims portrayed as Black were ascribed significantly more culpability than Hispanic or White victims but the culpability did not significantly differ between high and low endorsement of JWBs. However, perceived culpability did significantly differ between high and low endorsement of traditional gender stereotypes such that participants endorsing stronger adherence to a traditional gender schema ascribed greater culpability to victims regardless of race and victims portrayed as Black were ascribed higher culpability despite high or low endorsement of gender stereotypes.
