Özet:
The purpose of this research is to examine various factors contributing to depression among older Asian immigrants. The objectives of this research are to describe socio-demographic characteristics, levels of acculturation and psychological distress of the elderly Asian immigrants, and to examine the relationship between self-rated health status and psychological distress, the impact of acculturation, family support and living arrangement, as well as social network support on psychological distress among elderly Asian immigrant population.
A sample of 1919 older Asian adults was examined in this secondary research from available CHIS 2014--15 data. Hierarchical multiple regression indicated that three independent variables such as age (p=.002), socio-economic status (p=.000), and self-rated health condition ( p=.000) were statistically significant in predicting psychological distress among older Asian adults (R2 =.181). In other words, those older Asian immigrants who were younger, had social network support and higher income, were fluent in English and rated their health as good, very good or excellent exhibited lower levels of depression compared to those who were older with poor health or chronical diseases, had low support, and low level of acculturation.
The finding suggests that service providers have to provide culturally sensitive services for older Asian adults and design new service programs to support this population. Further study is needed to determine what kind of impact on the psychological well-being of older Asian immigrants have a connection with the homeland, having children live in proximity, amount of time of watching TV, and previous and existing experiences in their homeland and the USA. Implications for social work practices were discussed from a cultural perspective.
