When transitioning from traditional software to Agile practice, numerous challenges arise and resistance to change to Agile is one of them. The purpose of the case study is to understand reasons for transition resistance when transitioning from traditional software development practice to an Agile practice in an information technology (IT) healthcare department in Texas. The scope of the study was to apply the qualitative research methodology of single case study design to answer the rea60sons for transition resistance in a member-based health care unit in Dallas, Texas. The study was guided by the research question What are the reasons for transition resistance from traditional software development practice to an Agile practice in an IT healthcare department? Open ended interviews, document analysis and observation were used as data sources. NVivo 11 software assisted with the organization, management, and coding of the gathered data. Several themes emerged from the three data sources collected for the investigation; these themes included Resistance is from Habitual Human Nature, Lack of Understanding of Reasons for Change, Lack of Leadership, Poor Communication/Collaboration, Lack of Training/Education, and Micromanaging. Results from the investigation indicate a number of practical ways that leaders can thwart resistance to Agile. Some of the most salient recommendations for practice to emerge from the investigation included improving employee training, improving departmental communications, helping employees see the benefits of Agile, and improving leadership. Through these improvements, organizations may overcome common resistance to such changes, which may be the result of habitual human nature.
