Background: One of the prevalent childhood motor disabilities is developmental coordination disorder (DCD). There is limited evidence in the field of physical therapy for an effective intervention regime, specifically in postural control. The purpose is to conduct a meta-analysis and systemic review to compare the approach of strengthening versus task-based interventions on postural control in children with DCD.
Methods: A literature search in PubMed, CINHAL, EBSCO, and reference review yielded 252 articles, of which 5 fit the criteria to be included in this review. Inclusion criteria- intervention defined as task-oriented training or strength training, children between the ages of 5 and 12 with a diagnosis of DCD or considered at risk, statistical data available on postural control, and written in English. Exclusion criteria- combined or poorly defined interventions, and children with a diagnosis of neurological, intellectual or other movement disorders. Effect sizes and 95% confidence intervals (CI), and Q statistics for each study was calculated and presented in forest plots.
Results: A medium and large effect size on postural control was found in favor of task-based training in children with DCD showing heterogeneity using the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test (BOT) and Movement Assessment Battery for Children (MABC), and homogeneity using the Sensory Organization Test (SOT).
Conclusion: Children between the ages of 5 and 12 with DCD show greater improvements in postural control following task-oriented training, specifically neuromotor task training (NTT), than a protocol of strength training.
