Özet:
The intersectionality of transgender and Jewish identity is a seldom researched topic, as such a population is rarely explored from a psychological perspective. As both Judaism and transgenderism are non-binary identities, which exist among their own individual spectrums, the intersectionality of these two identities required in depth research into the histories, experiences, and individual identity developments of each group. This involved various models of Jewish identity such as Herman's (1977) theory of Jewish group membership, and Altman's (2010) examination of the six domains of Jewish identity, as well as transgender identity development such as Bem's (1993) gender schema theory. In an effort to explore the impact of transgender identity in Jewish culture, an in-depth literature review was made into the roles of gender and gender expression in Judaism. Beyond that, the histories of stress, prejudice, and discrimination for each group was explored to review the impact on their interactions with others. Field consultants from the fields of Jewish law and rabbinical studies, and psychotherapy with transgender individuals, as well as gestalt therapists focusing on authenticity with identity clashes were interviewed to further enhance the knowledge gained from the literature. The purpose of this study is to provide substantial information to clinicians and future researchers to improve their work and studies of the transgender Jewish population, including the unique histories, social and religious dynamics, as well as personal experiences of and those who worked with the transgender Jewish population.
