Population dynamics is a particular field of mathematical biology concerned with questions of the size, composition, and behavior of a population. The Verhulst (or Logistic) model was one of the first models used to study the growth of a population as a function of local carrying capacity and reproductive rate. The competitive Lotka-Volterra model may be considered the multi-population analogue of the Verhulst model. Although the traditional competitive Lotka-Volterra model is deterministic in nature, the model can be modified with stochastic terms to better account for randomness and long-term evolution. What results is a system of stochastic partial differential equations describing the interactions of two or more populations over time, with random variations allowed (to model "phenotypical drift"), as well as the opportunity for the populations to influence the shared environment (by improving or diminishing carrying capacity). These systems, while interesting, are not readily amenable to a theoretical approach. This paper focuses on the use of statistical and numerical analyses of the results of a simulation of such systems; in particular, the use of a differential evolution algorithm to search for behavioral optima. The differential adaptation of populations to their environments is investigated, as well as the circumstances under which a population tends to exert and maintain regional hegemony; the circumstances under which a population tends to usurp the regional hegemon; the circumstances under which two or more populations tend to attain stable diversity; the interactions between differently evolved populations; the impact of environments of varying sizes. The implications of these findings are considered in light of the relevant literature.
