Özet:
This study was designed to explore the variables that may either directly or indirectly be linked to goal setting and performance. Furthermore, it sought to discover which individual differences examined would relate to one's decision to set higher goals for oneself and to perform at a higher level in order to meet these goals. It was hypothesized that need for achievement (nAch) would moderate the relationships between the following variables: 1) task-specific self-efficacy and performance, 2) task-specific self-efficacy and goal difficulty and 3) goal-difficulty and performance. It was also hypothesized that goal commitment would moderate the strength of the task-specific self-efficacy and performance relationship, such that for individuals with higher levels of goal commitment, there would be a stronger positive relationship between task-specific self-efficacy and level of task performance than for individuals with lower levels of goal commitment. Finally, it was hypothesized that level of difficulty of self-set goals would mediate the relationship between task-specific self-efficacy and performance. One-hundred and thirty individuals, who held full-time jobs in administrative occupations, served as participants in this study. Participants were asked to complete a performance task in a given amount of time. Prior to beginning the task, participants were asked to fill out a series of questionnaires and set personal goals for themselves regarding the task. Upon completion of the study, data was collected and analyzed through multiple regression data analyses. Results indicated that nAch and goal commitment did not moderate the relationships of the previously mentioned variables, nor did goal difficulty mediate the relationship between the variables discussed---thus none of the hypotheses of the present study were supported. Limitations, as well as future research direction, are discussed.
