Özet:
Reading difficulties are highly prevalent among students, which impact their ability to achieve academically within the school setting and beyond. Elevated anxiety levels and reading achievement are closely related for many students, creating a potential cycle of low achievement and elevated anxiety levels. However, few studies have examined the impact of interventions on both anxiety and reading difficulties. Thus, novel interventions are a necessity in order to manage difficulties in both areas. The use of Canine-Assisted Therapy (CAT) reading programs has led to decreases in anxiety and increases in reading skills, as therapy dogs provide a sense of unconditional acceptance and emotional and social support for students. However, there are legitimate concerns and a lack of knowledge voiced by parents, teachers, and administrators regarding the use of CAT reading programs in schools, which may impact implementation. Therefore, this study examined educator knowledge, acceptability, concerns, and efforts toward implementation of a CAT reading program following an in-service training. While parents were also recruited, low response rate resulted in no conclusions. Nine educators (i.e. teachers, administrators) that attended the workshop completed a survey at three time points, which addressed each outcome variable. Descriptive, ANOVA, and correlational analyses were utilized to investigate the research questions. Results indicated that participants increased their knowledge about CAT programs, which was maintained at follow-up. Concerns also decreased over the course of the study, although this decrease was only apparent at follow-up. Acceptability did not increase, but unusually high levels of acceptability were reported throughout the study. A subset of participants reported efforts to implement a CAT reading program, notably through contacting administrators or successfully implementing a program. A website was created for this study to encourage further learning on the topic. Many participants utilized the website and those that did access it, reported that the information was helpful. Therefore, a dual model of workshops and additional information provided through a website can be effective in increasing knowledge and decreasing concerns of CAT reading programs and ultimately, lead to the implementation of such a program. Limitations, future directions, and implications for the field of school psychology are discussed.
