The stagnation and even alarming decreases in church attendance and membership in the United States may be connected to the issue of church leadership. Despite the known connection between transformational leadership and employee turnover and retention, little is known regarding the connection between transformational leadership and church growth or nongrowth. The purpose of this quantitative, cross-sectional, correlational study was to examine the relationship of transformational leadership in pastors to the growth or nongrowth in church membership from 2010 to 2016 in the Tennessee District of the Assemblies of God churches. Participants completed the five Transformational Leadership subscales of the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire. Each subscale was a predictor variable in the multiple linear regression equation. Of 189 rural and urban pastors invited to participate, 44 usable surveys. Demographic information and church membership data for 2010 through 2016 were gathered from the Assemblies of God TN District office. Church growth or nongrowth, a dichotomous variable, was the criterion variable. Descriptive statistics indicated high mean scores for transformational leadership among the participants. The results of the multiple regression were not significant, F(5, 38) = 1.09, R2 = .05, p = .38. No relationship was found between transformational leadership among pastors and church growth or nongrowth. The results of the study implied that church attendance and employee turnover have different causes. The pastoral relationship is more distant, less frequent, and less intense than is the daily on-the-job relationship in a business organization. It is recommended that researchers investigate other possible causes of church decline, such as cultural factors, church location, membership age, church life cycles, and excessive inward focus. Comparisons between churches would be useful, as more conservative and stricter congregations tend to have better maintenance of attendance levels, perhaps because of increased levels of engagement and commitment. Other forms of leadership, such as servant leadership or authentic leadership, could also be investigated.
