Urbanization is on the rise worldwide and in the face of global pollinator declines, can have a big impact on ecosystem functioning and services. Yet, little is known about how bee species respond to urbanization. A common way to tackle this question is to address it from a taxonomic view, i.e. species diversity. However, while nearly one third of Missouri's bee fauna is found within the city of St. Louis, the specific aspects of the environment that bees are responding to are unknown.
We studied bees' functional and taxonomic diversity to investigate patterns of bee species' distribution within the city of St. Louis, MO. To assess this, we sampled eight community gardens; four in low-income and four in high-income neighborhoods. We looked at habitat characteristics within each garden and in the neighborhoods the gardens were located. Sampling was done in a systematic fashion from mid-May to late September 2016 at a rate of 0.25 person per hour hectare. The functional traits examined included flight period, lecty (generalist or specialist forager), nest location (above or below ground), body size (a proxy for foraging distance) and sociality (solitary or social) as well as whether the species is native to the region or introduced.
Forty-seven species representing five families and twenty-one genera were collected. Thirty-six species were found in low-income neighborhoods while forty species were found in high-income neighborhoods. We found both bee species richness and functional diversity were associated with urban environments. Bee abundances and species richness were associated with garden characteristics (e.g., flower species diversity, garden size) while bee functional diversity was associated with neighborhood characteristics (e.g., number of houses, population density, and income). Our research demonstrates that while community gardens harbor high bee diversity, local (within garden) and landscape (neighborhood) factors are associated with patterns of bee species richness and functional diversity. In addition to understanding how bees respond to urban landscape, our results may have significance for understanding community functioning and ecosystem services within the context of a human-altered system.
