Özet:
Cardiac adipose tissue (CAT) is the fat that accumulates between the myocardium and the visceral pericardium. Increased volume of CAT has ability to secrete chemicals that give rise to the coronary disease. Although the quantification of the CAT volume can be done via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), it does not reveal any information about CAT distribution across the myocardial surface. To be able to quantify the distribution of the CAT across the surface of the heart, a technique is developed to create a three-dimensional (3D) modeling. In this study, Dixon MRI scans were collected from 11 subjects that were under the exercise intervention. These scans produce a registered 3D set of fat-only and water-only images. Each subject was gone through two scanning procedures with the second scan obtained 3 weeks after the first scan. To identify heart and CAT, a previously reported segmentation algorithm was used. 3D CAT models were investigated by two different methodologies. The first one created 3D models of both surfaces by extracting contours from the labeled images and imported them into NX 10. The second one composed 3D CAT models by using the medical imaging and image processing software "3D slicer". In both registration of hearth models and creation of an average heart surface, the Procrustes analysis was applied. And then an iterative closest point algorithm was used in order to be able to calculate CAT thickness based on the registered and aligned CAT models. The thickness at each location was calculated by using multiple factors. These included usage of rays that were cast in directions specified by a spherical parameterization of elevation and azimuthal angles, and intersections of the ray with the CAT surface. To create a single integrated model that represents the average CAT thickness across the surface of the myocardium, the average of thickness maps was "painted" on the average heart model.
