Özet:
Maintaining a racially and ethnically diverse faculty is a powerful tool in attracting, retaining, and graduating students of color and provides a host of educational benefits, yet institutions struggle to overcome complex challenges in recruiting and retaining faculty members from diverse backgrounds. The research literature has often cited the importance of top-down leadership when recruiting faculty of color. However, no empirical research has been conducted on diversity in Christian higher education that is inclusive of governance. The purpose of the current study was to address this gap in the literature by determining to what extent governing board diversity is related to faculty diversity and predictive of faculty perceptions of the campus racial climate at Christian higher educaiton institutions. An instrument was developed to collect board demographic information from member and domestic affiliate institutions of the Association for Biblical Higher Education and the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities. The Faculty Classroom Diversity Questionnaire was used to measure faculty perceptions of the campus racial climate. A chi-square test revealed that governing board diversity is independent of faculty diversity when governing board diversity was disaggregated according to individual categories of race and ethnicity; however, the dichotomous variables (minority vs. non-minority) were associated. Simple linear regression determined that governing board diversity cannot predict faculty perceptions of the campus racial climate.
