Özet:
The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us that God established marriage as part of the order of creation. Man and woman were created for one another; "Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and clings to his wife, and they become 'one flesh'" (Gen 2:24; CCC 1605). God has designed marital love to be both unitive and procreative. Both dimensions are intrinsically good and inherent to the matrimonial covenant. The total self-giving love of the couple should encompass fidelity to one's spouse and openness to new life. Consequently, in marital love one cannot separate the unitive from the procreative dimension.
In Confucian thought, marriage is of grave significance both to families and to society as well as being important for the cultivation of virtue. Ultimately, the most important purpose of marriage was ancestor worship and continuing the family line. After Confucius, Mencius is widely considered to be the most authoritative thinker in the history of Confucianism. His famous saying is "there are three things which are unfilial, and to have no posterity is the greatest of them" (Mencius, IV, A: 26)." At present, Confucian thought still influence people's daily life. Having children, especially males, increases the status of both men and women. The Chinese government has made Confucian ideas its official philosophy. There are signs that China's national leaders are also increasingly promoting Confucianism.
Christianity has existed in China in various forms since at least the Tang Dynasty (618--907) in the eighth century. Christianity in China has experienced remarkable growth over the course of the past century. Yet because they often remain poorly informed about church teachings, some confusion on the part of Chinese Catholics has emerged recently regarding the place of procreation in marriage. Chinese culture understands the purpose of marriage as exclusively ordered to procreation. Chinese marriage law does not say that if the couples are childless, they may divorce; but there are a lot of Chinese couples who divorce because of childlessness. On the basis of what theological positions can Chinese Catholics think about the sanctity of marriage and procreation in marriage? The Church's teaching on this issue can help Chinese Catholics to shape a Christian understanding of procreation and marriage. Meanwhile, the Church can learn something from the Confucian tradition.
