Özet:
Refection as a Window into the Minds of Teachers is a study of the journey of six secondary English as a New Language (ENL) and English teachers sharing their thinking together in using teacher reflection journals. Reflection journals often have been promoted as a tool to use to support reflective thinking. Few studies have explored the use of reflective journals in a public school setting and even fewer have looked at reflection journals as a window into the unique lenses of co-teachers. This study focuses on three teams of teachers, each with an English and an ENL teacher working together in a co-teaching environment are used as participants. Each participant reflected as an individual in a personal reflection journal. Additionally all six participants reflected as a collaborative group in a shared reflection document.
Three lenses were used as windows into the data: the individual teacher view, the stance of each discipline, and the outlook over time. Twenty codes were created and then they were clustered into four overarching categories, students, teachers, educational design and supports. Patterns discovered through the coding of each journal are expressed through seven themes that arose during the exploration of the research question findings. Findings revealed that the teachers became more reflective over the course of time and found the process valuable to them as it related to the teaching and learning that occurred in their classrooms. ENL teachers tended to reflect from a more student-centric viewpoint while English teachers were more teacher-centric. There are implications for using reflection journals in education my research indicates that they require creating a culture where teacher reflection is important is critical and one needs to put time, space and value on the practice for it to be embraced.
