Özet:
Herbivores metabolically alter their physiology to compensate for the nutritive qualities of their host plant tissues combined with the plants multitude of defensive compounds. Plants often produce defensive compounds that herbivores attempt to compensate or counteract through their metabolism. This research aims to study the growth and the gene expression of 3rd Instar Helicoverpa zea, the corn earworm caterpillar after feeding on Zea mays, corn plants leaves, or fruit tissues compared to a control treatment, which was an artificial diet that represented as an ideal diet. The caterpillars were weighed after feeding for 72 hours on the three different treatments. Caterpillars that fed on fruits had substantially larger body weights than caterpillars that fed on leaves and were more similar in weight to caterpillars fed with the artificial diet. The caterpillars were then flash frozen. Their RNA was extracted for microarray analyze the caterpillar's transcriptome. The microarray's resulted revealed an alteration in the expression of 3,240 genes among the three treatments. The control treatment and fruit treatment were more similar in overall gene expression to each other than to the leaf treatment. In general, the gene expression for genes responsible for digestion such as proteases, lipases, carbohydrates were substantial more for caterpillars that fed on leaves than the other two treatments. For other functional groups immunity, growth, and detoxification was more variably distributed among three treatments. This study gives us a better understanding of the physiological interactions between this caterpillar and its host plant host.
