Özet:
The number of people who participate in unconventional politics (i.e., protest, attending rallies) in the United States is on the rise. Early research saw participants as irrational and isolated. Current research sees participation as associated with the individual's ideology and political party. This study fills a gap in the literature on unconventional political participation by examining how the individual's religious-spiritual identity is associated with propensity for participation in unconventional politics. I use General Social Survey data from 2014 to analyze how self-identified religiosity and self-identified spirituality are associated with participation in demonstrations and attendance at rallies. Results show that those who identify as spiritual-non-religious are more likely to participate than religious-non-spiritual, neither spiritual nor religious, and both spiritual and religious. Spiritual-non-religious Americans are more likely to participate in unconventional politics, when controlling for age, gender, race, education, marital status, and parenthood. Furthermore, those with a bachelor's degree are more likely to participate, women are less likely to participate, and Democrats are more likely to participate in demonstrations and rallies. These results suggest that individuals not affiliated with a religious organization may be more active in the political realm in these ways. My results have implications for both the religious and political spheres. If the U.S. witnesses diminishing religious influence in the future, the political realm may see even more unconventional action and participation by more individuals. Greater participation in rallies and protest requires we reconsider the sources of political change in the United States.
