"Succession Planning" was the topic chosen for this dissertation for several reasons based on the following observations: 1) current leadership in the community college world is experiencing the exit of great masses of leaders; 2) this has created an urgent need for the implementation of succession planning and leadership development programs.
The community college world mirrors that of many businesses that have been significantly impacted by the generation of baby boomers reaching retirement age and leaving the workplace. The aging of current presidents, a lack of qualified candidates in the pipeline, and a high demand for top candidates has led to intense competition among institutions in need of new leadership.
The research questions for this qualitative study included: 1. Are there characteristics of the succession planning process utilized in business and industry that can be incorporated or adapted into community college succession plans? 2. Are there elements of a leadership development program utilized in business and industry that can be adapted into community college leadership development programs?
In summary, the data analysis based on interviews with business and industry leaders and community college presidents reveals specific areas of transfer from business practices to educational development of a robust succession planning platform. Areas include: 1) a process for talent identification that includes diversity and is enhanced by the usage of technology; 2) the creation of a leadership culture that provides opportunities for movement, development, and challenging assignments so potential individuals can demonstrate high levels of performance and ability; 3) providing a leadership development program to attract and retain talent.
