Özet:
Psychotherapy can be offered in a variety of ways, and psychotherapists have a multitude of theoretical orientations or styles, techniques, and interventions to choose from when shaping their clinical practice. Though the client's body is always present in the room while the therapy is taking place, conscious integration of bodily sensations into the therapeutic work does not always occur. Through skillful guidance by the therapist, clients may more readily access awareness of their bodies as an often-neglected source of personal growth. Whereas mind--body techniques are widely publicized, they are not generally a focus of professional training. Thus, many practitioners adopt mind--body methods after having established a psychotherapy practice. In this study, the processes and therapist's internal experiences of supplementing one's practice with mind--body techniques (MBT) were assessed using an adaptation of grounded theory methods. Interviews helped capture the extended process of adding mind--body techniques as adjuncts to an established psychotherapy practice. The 10 sampled participants are licensed therapists (with training at both masters and doctoral levels) and were solicited through fliers, email list-serves, and word of mouth in the psychological community in the San Francisco Bay Area. It is a goal of the study to add to the existing literature concerning the variables associated with the incorporation of mind--body techniques into a psychotherapy practice. The results of the study pointed to a clear distinction between the therapists' external process or the mechanics of adding MBT and their internal or subjective experience of incorporating a mind--body therapy into their work. Several of the therapists interviewed felt they could be more helpful to their clients should they include the client's bodily experience in their therapy and they stated this desire as a motivator to incorporating MBT into their practice. Even more strongly influential in their decision-making process around MBT incorporation seemed to be the belief systems held by the participants. A belief that MBT helps to increase one's mindfulness and awareness in general and that this increased awareness would promote greater healing was a common theme in participant responses. The therapists interviewed recalled both positive and negative reactions from their clients amidst MBT integration and noted a significant overlap between their personal mind-body practices and those utilized within their psychotherapy practice. With a lack of formal MBT coursework in graduate school curriculum, the participants acquired their knowledge on the topic in various, individualized ways.
