Özet:
Most research to date has focused on documenting the prevalence of community violence and the emotional and behavioral ramifications. Emerging as one of the most significant health issues facing American youths today, child and adolescent exposure to community violence has generated much interest across multiple disciplines. Exposure to community violence has become a primary concern for parents, school personnel, students, and the public in general. With a majority of children and adolescents being exposed to community violence, the need to understand the role principals play in assisting those students impacted by community violence exposure is of great concern.
The purpose of this study was to investigate elementary principals' knowledge and practices towards children exposed to community violence. Study participants were four principals, two social workers and 12 teachers from 18 different school districts representing Gary, East Chicago and Indianapolis, Indiana. All of the schools were located in low-income, poverty stricken communities that are plagued by community violence.
Data for the study was obtained through face-to-face interviews. The majority of the data came from teachers; therefore, the findings from these interviews are structured around a framework from a teacher's support, systematic protocol, and classroom strategies for children exposed to community violence. The school is one of the first environments that influence children's abilities to negotiate the world outside their home. Teachers are in a unique positon with the potential to act as parents, protectors and role models. This study provides principals, teachers and social workers with important information regarding child and adolescent behavioral, social and academic problems that have been shown to be related to community violence exposure. Implications of the findings for fostering resilience among young African American children in urban communities are discussed.
The findings from this study suggest four main conclusions: (a) Professional development training is extremely valuable in supporting school staff as they create safe and nurturing classroom environment; (b) there is a need for administrators, teachers and staff to build relationships with children and create a safe and predictable learning environment; (c) leadership support is an essential component to creating policies, procedures and protocol; and (d) successfully meeting the needs of children who have experienced traumatic life events is difficult work that requires a collaborative school culture.
Finally, this research provides an overview of the current literature regarding prevalence of youth's exposure to community violence, and identifies those areas where further research is warranted.
