Özet:
The purpose of this research was to understand the socialization of Hispanic students who transferred from primarily two year associate degree granting institutions to a four year baccalaureate Hispanic Serving Institution. This study specifically sought to answer the following research questions: a. How do the background characteristics of Hispanic students influence their socialization process after transferring to a four year Hispanic Serving Institution? b. What perceived organizational values of one, four year Hispanic Serving Institution contribute to the socialization process of Hispanic transfer students? c. What formal and informal normative contexts at primarily two year institutions influence Hispanic transfer students' integration at one, four year institution? d. What significance does parental socialization and non-college reference groups play in the college socialization process of Hispanic students?
In Chapter One the reader is introduced to the purpose and context of the study including the following topics: background, the Hispanic Serving Institution, and the Hispanic student and their experience. In Chapter Two the researcher introduces literature in the areas of undergraduate socialization, capital theory, and the two year to four year transfer student phenomenon. Chapter Three introduces the reader to the qualitative interview study protocol for the research that occurred at a Midwestern urban baccalaureate Hispanic Serving Institution. Chapter Four presents the data collected from the qualitative interviews and themes across the findings including: barriers, family support, investment, and integration. Chapter Five introduces an interpretation of the data collected with a connection to John Weidman's Undergraduate Socialization theoretical framework. Furthermore, Chapter Five discusses implications and recommedations for future practice and research. This study was designed to assist practitioners and administrators by bringing awareness to an issue that has received little attention using a qualitative research strategy. This study represents an effort to promote the development of the Hispanic Serving Institution and commitment by individual campuses to serve a rapidly growing student population, thereby closing the achievement gap.
