Özet:
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between acculturation and expectancy-value constructs among elementary Hispanic students in a suburban community school. Hispanic students self-selected for this study. A three-part questionnaire was used to conduct this research. Part A collected students' demographic information (sex, grade level, program, and generational status). Part B comprised 31 items related to expectancy-value constructs from the Motivated Strategies Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ). Part C comprised the Short Acculturation Scale for Hispanic Youth (SASH-Y). The study addressed three overarching research questions: Is there a significant relationship between expectancy and acculturation? Is there a significant relationship between value and acculturation? And is there a difference in acculturation by gender, program, grade level, and generations? Results yielded a significant correlation between acculturation and educational program (dual language, general education). Results also showed a non-statistically significant correlation between acculturation and expectancy-value constructs, and between acculturation and gender, grade level, and generation status. Recent research has demonstrated a negative correlation for Hispanic students in later settings such as middle school, high school, college. These findings suggest the importance of a longitudinal approach to understanding acculturation. With an understanding of factors such as acculturation and motivation, educators can develop appropriate programs and services that support success and academic attainment. Further implications for research and practice are also presented.
