My dissertation is an observational study aimed to present a detailed description of the normal and abnormal development of the muscular system in humans. Such a study is crucial to understand variations and anomalous arrangements of some muscles and the general patterns of the development of the muscular system. In my investigation, normal human newborns, fetuses, and embryos between 8 and 36-40 weeks of gestation, as well as abnormal human fetuses with conditions such as trisomy and anencephaly have been dissected using macro- and micro-dissection tools. When available, CT scans were also used for skeletal analysis. Additionally, the project also included literature reviews about the ontogeny of the muscles in earlier stages in normal individuals and about the scarce information available for abnormal muscle development. My observations revealed that some muscles will still be differentiating after week 7-8 of gestation (e.g., the intrinsic muscles of the hand and foot and facial muscles) contrary to what is often shown in embryological atlases. One original and important observation of this PhD project is that muscle variations are often seen during early stages of development, and some of the observed phenotypes in the early fetuses are just cases of anatomical variations seen in a single fetus. This is a very interesting observation by itself as almost no studies in humans have described, or discussed, variations in fetal stages, as if such variations could only occur in adults. The project also suggests that the variations and defects of the upper limbs are more common than those observed in the lower limbs, as some birth defects studies have already suggested. My studies done for my masters degree and in my current PhD research indicate that phenotypic birth defects caused by completely different genetic syndromes tend to be similar to each other and to natural variations or the normal phenotype present in other taxa, which supports Alberch's ill-named "logic of monsters". Furthermore, this project might help physicians to understand patterns that can be useful to address some medical conditions (e.g., trapped nerves or limited range of motion), develop proper physical or occupational therapies, and prepares surgeons to predict variations and defects that are not mentioned in the anatomy textbooks and atlases.
