Too many students struggle to learn mathematics, and yet learning mathematics is important (House, 2011). Teachers need to improve their efforts to help all students learn mathematics. An increase in teacher efficacy through professional development for the teachers will help the struggling students (Jerald, 2007). This research shows that this issue can be effectively addressed by professional learning for mathematics teachers.
The purpose of this study was to create, implement, and study a professional learning program for secondary mathematics teachers with the goal of raising their teacher self-efficacy by studying mathematical mindset. The research question is: In what ways and to what extent does a professional learning program for experienced secondary mathematics teachers impact their self-efficacy towards how they teach? The literature review answered these secondary questions: What are the elements of an effective professional learning program for adults? What are the effective strategies that can be used in the professional learning program to raise self-efficacy? What content should be taught to the participants of the professional learning program to help secondary mathematics teachers have a better understanding of each of their students?.
The hypothesis of this research was shown, that a professional learning program can have a significant impact on the self-efficacy of secondary mathematics teachers towards how they teach in this situation. This was done using Tschannen-Moran and Woolfolk Hoy's Teachers Sense of Efficacy Scale (2001) and an end-of-program survey, finding the mean and effect size of each question. It was assessed qualitatively using open response questions.
