The purpose of this study was to explore the factors that contribute to the effectiveness and longevity of a human resources community of practice (HR CoP). Existing research suggests that identifying a model that can distinguish critical success factors for successful implementation can be valuable to organizations. This study aimed to deepen the knowledge surrounding the relationship between knowledge management, communities of practice, and human resources and identify the factors that lend to the effectiveness and longevity of a CoP. The research questions for this study were "What are the factors that lend to the effectiveness of a human resources community of practice?" and "What are the factors that lead to the longevity of a human resources community of practice?" The method used for this qualitative research was case study design. The sources of evidence used for data collection were semi-structured interviews, observations and document analysis. The population for this study was human resources professionals from colleges, universities and educational institutions in Michigan who participate in an HR CoP. The sample of 14 human resources professionals in the community of practice contributed to one-on-one interviews, answering 11 main questions and 20 sub questions that aligned to four predetermined factors: management support, trust among members, relevant subject matter discussion, and efficient use of technology. Data analysis included manual and automated coding. The pattern matching logic was used to identify in and across the community of practice. The findings show that networking and the sharing of best practices were the two most frequently mentioned factors that contributed to the effectiveness and longevity of a human resources community of practice. These themes implied participants of the HR CoP expected to make connections with other HR professionals and draw on the knowledge and expertise of others both in and outside of the community.
