Özet:
Introduction: Muslims are one of the fastest growing religious groups in the US but there is a lack of research on the impact of religious beliefs on breast and cervical cancer screening in this community, especially in terms of the interplay of religious beliefs, acculturation, and sociodemographic factors that affect breast and cancer screening behavior.
Methods: Utilizing both qualitative and quantitative data, this dissertation explores the impact of religious beliefs on breast and cervical cancer screening behavior in a sample of 98 Muslim women of diverse races and ethnicities in NYC from the Muslim Americans Reaching for Health and Building Alliances (MARHABA) study.
Results: A literature review of US based studies suggested religious beliefs are a facilitator to screening, but women often do not seek screening because care does not accommodate their beliefs around modesty and/or care is not provided in-language. MARHABA qualitative and quantitative data suggested Muslim women held beliefs aligned with the Active Spiritual domain of the Spiritual Locus of Control Scale. Data suggested religious beliefs were not a barrier to screening, and qualitative data found religious beliefs were a facilitator to screening behavior as it aligned with the tenet of taking care of one's health as part of the Islamic faith, regardless of sociodemographic and/or acculturation factors. Other facilitators to screening were older age and more frequent utilization of health care services. Barriers to screening in the qualitative data included structural barriers, as well as fear of getting a mammogram and Pap test and fear of being diagnosed with cancer. This fear was exacerbated by a lack of knowledge about cancer screening and its purpose and importance, and misinformation around cancer screening, especially for cervical cancer.
Conclusions: Results of this dissertation have the potential to greatly impact the breast and cervical cancer screening experience for Muslim women, not only in terms of tailoring future health messaging and interventions for this population, but also informing culturally competent care. Further research is needed to expand on dissertation results as well as translate and apply findings in community-based and clinical settings.
