Özet:
In recent years, students with disabilities have participated in postsecondary education in increasing numbers (Park, Roberts & Robert, 2012; Sniatecki, Perry & Snell, 2015). Although professors' attitudes toward this population of students have been investigated, few studies have assessed these attitudes in Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) that offer degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This study, conducted at an HBCU, examined STEM and non-STEM faculty members' knowledge of and attitudes toward students with disabilities, as well as their knowledge about the disability service center and the provision of accommodations. It also examined the relationships among participants' knowledge of disability services, knowledge of accommodations and laws pertaining to students with disabilities, attitudes, and willingness to provide accommodations. Faculty attitudes and knowledge were measured using a modification of the Accommodations of University Students with Disabilities Inventory (AUSDI), developed by Wolman and McCrink (2004). Participants included 54 faculty members. The quantitative section of the study was followed by a qualitative component. No significant differences were found between STEM and non-STEM professors in their knowledge of accommodations for students with disabilities, in their attitudes toward students with disabilities, and in their familiarity and use of the disability service center. Significant differences were found between male and female faculty members' attitudes toward students with disabilities. Other findings indicated that faculty in non-STEM programs were significantly more familiar with Section 504 Law than faculty in STEM programs. Overall, there were significantly moderate to high correlations between knowledge, attitudes, and familiarity and use of the disability service center. The qualitative findings supported the quantitative findings of this study.
