Özet:
Nationally, only 75% of college students are retained from their first-year to second-year with 25% departing from their college institutions prematurely. Additionally, the current national 6-year college graduation rate is 60% (National Center for Education Statistics, 2016. It is widely accepted that attaining a college degree promotes numerous benefits to individuals and society ranging from financial to civic and health benefits. Additionally, attending college and departing prior to graduation leaves students with debt from school loans but without the degree.
Colleges and universities have developed numerous programs to promote retention of students that range from acclimating students to the social changes and academic challenges that lie ahead. These programs come in the form of seminars, tutoring and success centers, student life, and remediation programs. This dissertation takes an approach at evaluating a system through a positive psychology lens to see how a unique first-year academic initiative at a mid-sized private university promotes involvements with the university and whether these involvements can lead to improved retention over time.
