Özet:
This dissertation consists of three integrated essays on leader-follower dyads from a levels of analysis perspective. The dyad level is important as it emerges from interactions between two individuals and becomes the foundation of groups and teams. Moreover, leader-follower dyads are one of the key dyads in organizations. Despite the importance of leader-follower dyads, the majority of dyads research has been focused on limited topics and conducted in a way that leads to levels misalignment issues. Clearly, it is important to operationalize, measure, and analyze the variables of interest from both leader and follower perspectives to capture dyadic phenomena more comprehensively. Therefore, this dissertation incorporates this purely dyadic perspective, which considers both leaders and followers, and aims to contribute to better understanding of purely dyadic phenomena between leaders and followers.
The first essay reviews the current state of leader-follower dyads research through summarizing empirical studies that focused on pure leader-follower dyads. Research questions about the application of current leader-follower dyad theories, usage of analytic methods, and dimensionality of outcomes are addressed from the literature review results, and a nomological network of variables of leader-follower dyads is provided to visualize what we know about leader-follower dyads.
The second essay proposes a conceptual model of leader-follower dyadic relationship development by focusing on task-based and interpersonal-based relationships and suggests a typology of leader-follower dyadic relationships based on a wholes/parts views. As relationships take time to develop and are dynamic in nature, limited research attention has been given to this phenomenon. To enhance the understanding of relationship development, theory about the development process is reviewed and extended. Factors such as individual characteristics, dyad characteristics, and the environment, and the association among these factors, are proposed to build a conceptual model of relationship development. Computational modeling is implemented to illustrate the proposed dynamics of dyadic relationship development.
The third essay investigates various dyad-level outcomes while considering their cognitive, affective, and behavioral dimensions. Potential dyad-level outcomes and the associations among the suggested variables are proposed and tested through two field studies and with within and between analysis (WABA) and polynomial regression with response surface methodology.
