Özet:
Children transitioning to kindergarten lacking the appropriate skills is a significant problem in education as indicated by the multitudes of research in this area. Even though much research has been done on school readiness, there is a lack of research addressing individual factors of school readiness. While their children are in the preschool environment, parents may expect that they are being taught skills that would ready them for kindergarten. Parents are often too busy with daily life activities to delve into preschool behavior curriculum. However, research supported the claim that when a parent understands the expectations for their child to be successful in school they show a willingness to engage in the child's learning. The purpose of this qualitative research was to discover parent's perceptions and knowledge of their preschool-aged children's behavior in relation to school readiness skills, particularly social skills needed to transition to kindergarten successfully. For this qualitative study, the aim is to gather in-depth data to assist in understanding human behavior as it pertains to parent, teacher and student interaction with an emphasis on the kindergarten transition. For this study, parents were interviewed using a compilation of questions pertinent to the information needed to answer the proposed questions. To participate in this study, participants were required to have at least one child who currently or recently attended preschool prior to transitioning into kindergarten. Parents were recruited utilizing the snowball sampling technique. Twelve participants were located and interviewed utilizing the protocol created by the researcher. The conclusion of this study indicated that parents perceive that when their children attend a preschool or daycare, they are indeed being prepared for kindergarten both behaviorally and academically. These parents also indicated specific skills that they perceived assisted in their children being kindergarten transition ready. Recommendations for future research is that similar research be conducted to encompass a much larger and varied group of participants. Because the present research was completed within a school system, many of the participants were educators and therefore knowledgeable about the requirements of kindergarten.
