The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of RN academic preparation and practice experience on NHPPD as the administrative outcome. Two research questions were posed: (a) is there a correlation between the variance in target/actual NHPPD and the percent of RNs with a 4year nursing degree or higher? And (b) is there a correlation between the variance in target/actual NHPPD and the percent of RNs with less than one year of RN nursing experience? To answer these questions the secondary administrative data describing the education and experience direct care RNs was collected. The sample was drawn from a nationalized health care system's high complexity hospitals focusing on direct care RNs employed on medical, surgical and mix medical/surgical units. A total of 67 hospitals and 163 patient care units met study inclusion criteria. The Nursing Systems Research Outcomes model and structural contingency theory (SCT) formed the theoretical frame for data analysis. Descriptive and inferential statistical methods were used to summarize the data. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to examine the effect of the predictor variables on the actual and difference between target and actual NHPPD. The findings reveal that units with greater numbers of associate and bachelor's degree RNs were positively correlated with higher actual NHPPD. However, there was no evidence of a correlation between the diploma RN and actual NHPPD. When the NHPPD was replaced by the difference between target and actual nursing hours per patient day (DNHPPD) a positive correlation was detected among units with greater numbers of associate degree RN. And, units with greater number of RNs with less than one year of experience a positive correlation with the actual NHPPD was identified. However, no correlation was detected between RNs with less than one year of experience and the DNHPPD. There was no significant correlation appreciated between education and experience when combined on the actual NHPPD and the DNHPPD. The results of this study suggest that examining NHPPD and DNHPPD as administrative outcomes may provide valuable insight into the staff planning and budgeting process.
