As we approach the age of exascale computing, distributions have been playing an essential role to summarize, analyze and visualize large-scale data. Local histograms (i.e., point-wise histograms computed from local regions of mesh vertices) have been used in many data analysis and visualization applications. Previous methods for computing local histograms are mainly for regular grids and do not work for other types of grids/meshes. We develop new algorithms for computing local histograms of volume data on rectilinear grids, tetrahedral meshes and curvilinear grids using novel geometric methods, which are both efficient and effective. We then present a novel approach to select key time steps in large-scale time-varying datasets using distribution-driven techniques with efficient performance in the out-of-core setting. Finally, we extend the existing resolution-exact algorithms in robot motion planning to planar polygonal rigid robots with arbitrarily complex geometry, where we exploit the decomposability property of soft predicates for collision detection. Experiments show that our new approaches are practical and effective, and perform in real time on non-trivial environments.
