As market demand for remanufactured products increases and environmental legislations call for more restrict enforcements on original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), remanufacturing is becoming an important business. However, the profitability of take-back systems is hampered by several factors, including the lack of information on the quantity, quality, and timing of to-be-returned used products to a remanufacturing facility. Therefore, the efficiency of the remanufacturing operations can be improved by tackling these uncertainties.
Most of these uncertainties originate from the consumer behavior. Consumers' product return behavior affects the timing and quantity of the returns. For instance, consumers' participation in trade-in programs or second-hand markets and their acceptance of leasing services, which would result in the proper recovery of used products through appropriate channels, shape the product return streams. However, this behavior is mostly unpredictable. Factors that contribute to this unpredictability in the waste stream include product design features, consumers' awareness of recycling opportunities, their sociodemographic characteristics, corresponding costs, peer pressure, and the tendency of consumers to keep used items in storage.
On the other hand, consumers' usage and product repair behavior affect the quality and timing of the returns. However, despite various efforts to shed light on the different aspects of repair and maintenance processes, our entire understanding of the repair practices done on consumer electronics comes from either the manufacturers or professional repair experts. There is a lack of systematic, well-documented studies of repair practices by individual consumers. Understanding the factors contributing to unprofessional repair practices is a necessity to lengthen the lifespan of the product and to promote repair as an eco-behavior among individual consumers.
A system that helps predict the consumers' return behavior or their interactions with the product recovery programs could help the manufacturers or third party remanufacturers better estimate the return trends and develop appropriate policies to control them. Moreover, manufacturers could utilize the insights gained from investigating the consumers' product usage and repair behavior to devise innovative ways to tackle the uncertainty in the quality of the returned products, and therefore, to facilitate the corresponding remanufacturing efforts required to recover them.
This research aims at tackling these uncertainties by focusing on their original consumer behavior aspect. The objective of this research is to improve the effectiveness of the End-of-Use product recovery programs by providing insights about the consumer behavior and developing appropriate operation planning and product design guidelines to address the uncertainties present in the recovery operations. The first part of this dissertation addresses the uncertainties of the product recovery operations and develops mathematical models for the recovery operations planning under uncertainty in order to maximize the effectiveness of the operations. Then, a comprehensive Agent Based Simulation framework has been developed to construct a consumers' behavioral model throughout the product lifecycle, in order to address the effect of the consumer behavior on the generation of uncertainties in the product recovery operations. Several simulation-optimization analyses have been done using the framework to investigate the effectiveness of different designs and pricing policies on the improvement of product recovery. Finally, data from two sets of consumer surveys have been analyzed in order to construct the consumers' decision models and to provide the necessary input data to operate the Agent Based Simulations. A large set of consumer generated repair narratives have been analyzed using text mining techniques in order to shed light on the consumers' repair behavior and the effect of their repair experiences on their future product purchase decisions. Also, a survey study was conducted in order to construct the consumers' leasing acceptance model and test the functionality of the simulation framework.
The results of this research suggest that while the initial product design is a critical step in order to maintain proper product recovery, the various aspects of consumer behavior play a major role in the effectiveness of any recovery policy that is designed. The results of this study could help the policy makers to take every aspect of the recovery system into account and achieve better decision making schemes over a planning horizon.
