Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a well-researched disorder. Current effective treatments of ADHD include stimulant and nonstimulant medications, behavioral interventions, and training interventions. Well-established behavioral interventions include parent training, classroom modification, and peer training. Organizational training is currently the only training intervention considered to be well-established. Currently, research is sparse regarding music as an intervention for the disorder, though some evidence exists regarding the effects of passively listening to music and the improvement of ADHD symptoms. Physical exercise is also reported to have some evidence regarding improvement of ADHD symptoms. Learning an instrument, particularly the drums, combines elements of organizational training, music as an intervention, and physical exercise. This pilot study aim examined whether an adolescent learning to play the drums would experience any improvement in inattention, sustained attention, and vigilance as a result of 8 weeks of standard drum lessons. The assessment measure used was the Connors Continuous Performance Test 3rd Edition. Results indicated participants were better able to distinguish and respond to targets while ignoring non-targets as a result of learning to play the drums. Participants who were prescribed a stimulant medication experienced improvements in Inattention and Vigilance. Learning to play the drums may further reduce ADHD symptoms in those who are prescribed a stimulant medication.
