Literature confirms the importance of the public-school principal to staff success and student achievement (Rath & Conchie, 2008). The problem of an increasing number of principals leaving the profession within 5 years has been found to be detrimental to student achievement. This study identifies qualities of the "unseen space of leadership" that contribute to principals' success, increase their resiliency, and are connected to their decision to remain in the principal position or to move to a higher leadership role in education. Themes that emerged from the data collected in interviews include the importance of maturity and experience in addressing crises, the importance of being a life-long learner, the paradoxical relationship between principals and the district's central office, the complexity of leading an organization composed of stakeholders with conflicting interests, problems created for school leaders by the news media, the importance of having a personal support system, the therapy aspect of the principal role, and the importance of having a well-developed sense of humor. The challenges identified by the study participants all took place in their early years as a principal, from their first year to their fourth year in the position. The challenges fell into the following general categories: instructional, political, human tragedy, and racial. Most notable in the findings is that the five parables describing the unseen space of leadership, recounted by Kim and Mauborgne (1992), as well as the study participants' responses to their challenges, include a distinctive spiritual component. Research limitations include the subjective nature of the research and the limited number of study participants. The researcher used purposive sampling and limited the number of participants to nine. Conclusions and data analysis are limited to the researcher's limitations. However, the researcher believes her personal connection to the study participants was necessary for the participants to have enough trust in the researcher to be honest and forthcoming, and to share their stories that were deeply personal, emotional, and sometimes traumatic.
