This research studied how philanthropic Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) affected the perceptions of potential job seekers. Organizations have found that recruiting of experienced employees has become very competitive. In order to attract more job applicants, organization have relied on a number of ways to improve their chances of attracting more applicants. One way has been to include information concerning an organization's CSR programs. Previous research has studied the effects of CSR on recruitment and found a positive relationship. Initially, researcher focused on organization attractiveness as the perception that might explain why CSR influenced job seekers' perception in a positive manner. Further study found that organizational reputation was an additional perception that appeared to influence job seekers. Finally, more recent research added a third perception, job pursuit intentions. Based on a literature review of such research, this dissertation paper studied the relationship of CSR to the three perceptions of organizational reputation, organization attractiveness, and job pursuit intentions. The literature review showed that past research had generally defined CSR in very broad terms. Included in the definition of CSR were employee related CSR, treatment of minorities, better environmental practices, and acts of philanthropy and charity. This paper defined CSR in narrower terms, as being philanthropic and charitable actions. A role-playing experiment was conducted on working adults, acting as if they were job seekers, reading a fictional organization's job listing, and responding to statements about their perceptions of the organization. Analysis of results by an ANOVA showed that knowledge of CSR did show a positive relationship to all job seekers perceptions. Implications of this research indicate that organization should include in job listings information about an organization's CSR philosophy and activities.
