Özet:
The problem that this study addressed is the perceived effect of social media on employee performance and effectiveness. The specific business problem is that some companies do not have sufficient social media guidelines and standards that allow employees to use social media during work hours in a positive manner. This is a concern for those companies and their employees because the lack of guidelines and standards can present an uncontrolled environment that could result in profit-loss for the organization and poor performance for the employees. The purpose of this study is to investigate if management level employees believe their subordinates are affected by the use of social media in the workplace during business hours. This study was conducted using a qualitative case study approach and the data collection involved 3 participants that were used in the analysis. An interview guide was used to collect the data from the participants manually via phone and in-person interviews. The case study approach was taken to provide an in-depth, informative analysis of the research. The participants were located in various parts of the United States of America, and all 3 participants were managers from different industries to include Human Resource, Sales, and Warehousing. The answers varied, but there was a consensus that social media does hinder employee performance; especially if the organizations does not have proper guidelines in place for the employees to follow. Future research would cause for tools to be created to monitor the employee's daily usage of their personal and company devices and compare those numbers to the employee's actual performance reviews. This would be the sufficient way to see if social media affects the employee's performance and effectiveness during business hours.
